Science Week at FGSC 12-16th of August
This year's theme, "Species Survival: More than Just Sustainability," highlights critical challenges affecting Earth's ecosystems, particularly here in Australia. As a nation with over 200,000 animal species and around 24,000 native plant species, our stewardship is vital to ensuring their long-term survival.
In all Science classes all week, students particpated in activities and lessons related to our central theme. On top of that, we had some fun initiatives that all students were invited to attend and participate in during lunchtime each day.
Composting
Kicking off our activities, our Garden Club leaders held a composting workshop demonstrating to students how to make nutrient rich compost from garden scraps, reducing the need to use harmful chemicals in our gardens. Our composting wheels were recently purchased with the funds raised from a sausage sizzle held earlier this year at Bunnings.
Planting
On Day 2, students were planting vegetables and herbs in our garden. Once these grow, they are then used by our food technology classes for food preparation, teaching healthy habits and how to reduce costs in buying produce. Students also cleaned up the garden by pulling out weeds and putting them in our composting system, utilising the knowledge they learnt the day before. They will continue this work each week during Garden Club. Garden club will be held every Monday at lunchtime in the Arts garden with all students welcome to come and roll up their sleeves and particpate.
Awareness Workshop & Guest Speaker
On Days 3 and 4 we held an Awareness Workshop on banned plastics, recycling, and "Unplastify." Students engaged in a bird beak adaptation activity to explore evolutionary survival strategies. They were also treated to a guest speaker who discussed key aspects of species survival.
Clean Up Campaign
On the final day, we held a school wide clean-up campaign. Student volunteers all did their bit to clean up the school with drinks provided for their efforts. The rubbish bags were weighed at the end of lunch with the winning group receiving a prize.
Thank you to the students who took the time to participate in these initiatives. Thank you to our Science staff and volunteers for running another successful Science Week!
