Year 9 & 10 Photography

Year 9 Photography

Composition Unit - Still Life Exploration

This term, Year 9 photography students explored the composition guidelines and then focused on the art of still life photography, inspired by traditional Dutch vanitas still life paintings. Through this project, students explored how objects can tell a story and convey deeper symbolism within a composition. Using a variety of lighting techniques—such as natural light, reflected light, and studio lighting—they experimented with shadows, textures, and highlights to create visually engaging images. Students also developed technical skills by exploring DSLR camera settings to take creative control of their photos and used Photoshop to refine their work. The following final still life photographs reflect the skills students have developed throughout this unit.

Year 10 Photography

Portraiture Unit

This term, Year 10 students explored portrait photography. Working collaboratively in groups of three—taking turns as the model, photographer, and assistant—students learnt how to compose and capture creative portraits.  A key focus of this unit was mastering the use of light. Students learned how the quality, direction, and intensity of light can evoke different emotions and enhance their photographs. They explored various lighting patterns, practiced posing techniques, and considered the impact of backgrounds, locations, and colour schemes in creating visually striking images. The skills acquired during this unit are showcased in their final portrait photographs below.
