School-Based Apprenticeships & Traineeships (SBATs)

A School-Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship (SBAT) is another way you can build real-world skills while completing your VPC or VCE VM.

It combines school, training, and paid work—all in one program.

What is Head Start?

Head Start is a pathway for students (15+ in Years 10, 11 & 12) who want to start an apprenticeship or traineeship while still at school.

It allows you to spend more time working and training in a real job, while completing your VPC or VCE VM.

It’s designed for students who are serious about starting their career early.

How Head Start Works

A Head Start program has three key parts:

1. Flexible School Program

• Your VPC or VCE VM studies are adjusted to fit around your work
• Strong focus on literacy and numeracy skills

2. Industry Training

• You complete formal training through a TAFE or Registered Training Organisation (RTO)
• Training is linked directly to your job so you build real skills

3. Paid Work

• You spend more time on the job each year
• You get paid while learning
• You build real experience and progress in your apprenticeship or traineeship

How It Counts Towards Your VCE VM

An SBAT contributes to your VPC or VCE VM completion, just like a VET subject.

• Provides credit for Units 1–4
• Supports your overall certificate completion
• May contribute to an ATAR (in some cases)

What’s Required?

To start an SBAT, you must:

• Be employed in a paid part-time job
• Sign a training contract

• Commit to at least 13 hours per week (work + training)

This contract is registered with:

• The Department of Education
• The Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA)

What Industries Are Available?

SBATs are available in a range of industries, depending on opportunities and placements. Students have access to over 100 different industry roles.

Common areas include:

• Building & Construction
• Early Childhood Education
• Hair Dressing / Barbering
• Business
• Warehousing
• Light Automotive / Paint & Panel

Available options can change each year based on employer availability.

• Your school
