Victorian School of Languages (VSL)

Browse this guide

The Victorian School of Languages (VSL) is a government school that gives students access to language subjects not offered at their school.

If your school doesn’t offer the language you want to study, VSL is a great option.

* School Approval Required

How It Works

  • Available for students from Prep to Year 12
  • VCE language subjects are fully accredited by VCAA
  • You stay enrolled at your school and attend VSL classes outside school hours

Face-to-Face Classes

VSL offers classes at 40+ centres across metropolitan and regional Victoria.

  • Classes are usually held at government secondary schools
  • Most classes run on Saturday mornings
  • Some classes are available on weekday evenings

Courses follow the same standards and content as regular school language classes.

Why Study a Language?

Studying a language can:

  • Help you stay connected to your culture and background
  • Build confidence if English isn’t your first language
  • Strengthen your communication skills
  • Contribute to your VCE studies and ATAR
  • Open up future career and travel opportunities

It can also reduce the pressure of learning everything in English while continuing to develop your first language.

Languages Available

VSL offers a wide range of languages, including:

  • Arabic
  • Chinese (Mandarin)
  • Dari
  • Khmer
  • Persian
  • Punjabi
  • Pashto
  • Serbian
  • Sinhala
  • Spanish
  • Vietnamese

And many more depending on availability.
