This certificate provides an entry-level qualification for students interested in developing the practical skills and knowledge required for a career in engineering and manufacturing industries. Students focus on foundational engineering principles, fabrication techniques, machining processes and workplace safety while exploring employment opportunities and career pathways within the engineering sector.

Students will build hands-on skills in fabrication, machining, interpreting engineering drawings and completing engineering projects using industry-standard tools and equipment. Previous student projects have included the construction of a metal toolbox in Year One and a metal steam engine in Year Two.

Aims

  • Provides participants with the knowledge and skills to achieve competencies that will enhance their employment prospects within the engineering and manufacturing industries.
  • Gives students an introductory overview of engineering processes, fabrication, machining and manufacturing practices.
  • Provides a strong base for future engineering related studies, apprenticeships and traineeships.

Further Studies in the Field

This VCE VET course is a recognised pre-apprenticeship and provides a strong foundation for a career in engineering. Many employers prefer or require students to complete a pre-apprenticeship before commencing an apprenticeship pathway.

Possible Pathways for Further Study

Students will gain foundation knowledge and practical skills that may support pathways into further study and higher qualifications, including:

  • Certificate III in Engineering (Composites, Fabrication, Mechanical or Technical)
  • Certificate IV in Engineering (Higher Engineering Trade)
  • Diploma of Engineering
  • Bachelor of Engineering

Career Pathway

These are potential careers you can pursue through further study at university or TAFE, or by entering the workforce directly. Apprenticeships and traineeships are also available in selected vocational industries.

Assessment

Students wishing to receive an ATAR contribution for the VCE VET program Unit 3 & 4 sequence must undertake scored assessment for the purpose of achieving a study score. This study score can contribute directly to the ATAR, either as one of the student's best four studies (the primary four) or as a fifth or sixth study increment.

Additional VCE VET Information

VCE VET is based on applied learning, combining theory with practical experience relevant to real workplaces. Students develop industry-specific skills that prepare them to be job-ready from day one.

Key Course Information

  • Students are required to enrol in VCE Foundation Maths or higher as part of his certificate.
  • Classes may be scheduled outside normal school hours and may include offsite practical assessments and/or industry-based activities.
  • Some courses require students to purchase and wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for practical classes. Students who do not attend in the correct PPE may be removed from class due to workplace safety requirements.
  • Students are required to bring a fully charged laptop to every VET class.
  • Students enrolled in a VCE VET program must successfully complete the LLN (Literacy and Numeracy) assessment to participate in the course.
  • Successful completion of all units of competency is required to achieve the full certificate qualification.
  • Students must successfully complete all Year One units before progressing to the second year of the program.
