English and English as an Additional Language (EAL) Year 9

Browse this guide

Students are placed in an English class based on their data, needs and eligibility. The three potential class options are:

  • General English
  • Enrichment English
  • English as an Additional Language

All English and EAL classes pathway into VCE General or VCE Vocational Major, and students strengthen their reading comprehension, extended writing, analytical, evaluative and communication (oral and written) skills.

In Year 9 English, students develop their analytical skills through the study of a variety of texts. These analytical skills are further consolidated through their study of media texts. Students also complete narrative writing tasks and present persuasive speeches.

EAL classes at Years 9 and 10 are combined to allow students to be grouped according to their English language proficiency.  Students are placed into different levels based on how well they understand and use English. These levels are explained at the bottom of this page.
