Physical education and Health education are year-long subjects where students engage in both subjects each term. Students will be timetabled for three periods of Health a fortnight and three periods of Physical Education a fortnight, for the year.
In Year 9 Physical Education, you will cover areas including the roles and responsibilities of sport coaching, ethical considerations, minor and major games, and contemporary issues.
In Year 9 Health, you will explore topics such as drug and alcohol education, risk-taking behaviours, gender norms, identity, and discrimination.
In Physical education you will cultivate the confidence to design, conduct, and evaluate successful sporting sessions. Additionally, you will deepen your understanding of a diverse range of sports through active participation and effective game management.
In Health education students attain comprehensive education on drugs, alcohol, relationships, identity, and community wellbeing, focusing on informed decision-making, risk assessment, and respectful behaviour.
It uses real-life scenarios, role-playing, and discussions to explore legal and illegal substances, consent, peer pressure, discrimination, and the emotional, social, and legal implications of risky behaviour
Students are encouraged to build resilience, understand their rights and responsibilities, access support services, and critically evaluate influences such as media, cultural norms and societal expectations.
Students design a lesson plan to teach a component of a coaching session to their peers and evaluate their performance based on feedback from their peers.
In this assessment, you will demonstrate how well you can analyse, apply and adapt movement skills across a variety of challenging contexts, including indoor and outdoor activities. You will also show your ability to create and refine strategies, apply key movement concepts (such as force, balance, timing and spatial awareness), and evaluate performance by giving and applying constructive feedback.
Students analyse a range of risky behaviour case studies which explore key topics related to vaping, safe partying and first aid. Students will evaluate the case studies' information to make informed and responsible decisions.
Students present a poster or brochure on identity or gender and discuss societal norms, how people are discriminated against based on gender and identity and its impact on an individual. Students also identify strategies to support minority groups and describe where people can go for help and support.
