This engaging and hands-on elective introduces students to the physical laws that explain how and why objects move. By exploring concepts of motion, forces, and electromagnetism, students gain a deeper understanding of the world around them. Through real-world examples and investigations, students learn how physics is applied in everyday life and in emerging technologies.  

The course helps students build critical thinking, problem-solving, and scientific investigation skills. It is well suited to students who are curious about how things work and enjoy learning through theory and practical experiments. This subject also provides excellent preparation for senior science subjects in VCE, especially Physics and Chemistry.  

What You Will Learn

Newton’s Laws of Motion

Students learn about Newton’s three laws and use them to explain and predict the movement of objects. This includes activities like modelling how cars accelerate, stop, or crash, and why seat belts are important.  

Forces and Motion

Students investigate how forces—such as gravity, friction, and applied pushes or pulls—affect the motion of objects. They will carry out hands-on experiments to analyse how objects move under different conditions. 

Electromagnetism and Real-World Applications

Students explore how magnets and electricity work together to power devices like motors and generators. They also learn how electromagnets are used in technology, from electric vehicles to magnetic levitation trains.  

Assessment Tasks

Motion Investigation: Students analyse how different forces affect the motion of an object.  

Electromagnetism Investigation: Students explore how electromagnets work and present a report on their practical investigation.  

Future School Pathways

This subject offers a strong foundation for VCE Physics and Chemistry. It is ideal for students considering careers in science, engineering, aviation, architecture, health sciences, or other STEM-related fields.
