Creative Performance is an exciting and dynamic subject designed for students with an interest in:
This practical, hands-on course allows students to explore performance through designing performance and/ or engaging in performance.
All students will complete workshops in all three specialty areas before choosing one stream to focus on for assessment. These areas of performance are:
Students will investigate the work of famous practitioners and performance techniques, using these as inspiration to create original and engaging large-scale performances. Through workshops, rehearsals, performance tasks, and creative projects, students will learn how to communicate ideas, tell stories, and connect with audiences in meaningful ways.
The subject includes both practical and theoretical components, encouraging students to reflect on performance styles, analyse professional works, and apply industry-inspired techniques to their own creative process. Creative Performance is ideal for students who enjoy performing, creating, experimenting, and working collaboratively in a supportive and energetic environment.
Students will either direct and design or direct and perform.
Students will explore a range of influential performance styles including Physical Theatre, Verbatim Theatre, and Epic Theatre.
They will study the work and techniques of renowned practitioners such as Bertolt Brecht and Rudolf Laban, using these ideas to inspire and shape their own performances.
Students will train extensively in their chosen craft of Drama or Dance, or show an understanding of the craft to allow directing/ choreography while developing skills in movement, expressive performance, collaboration, devising, rehearsal, and stagecraft.
The course also provides opportunities to participate in workshops led by external industry artists and performers, allowing students to gain insight into professional creative practices. Students will attend and analyse a live performance by a Melbourne-based theatre company, using this experience as the basis for their performance analysis and theoretical studies.
Students will develop practical creative industries and production skills through hands-on, work-related learning experiences and industry excursions. This elective is designed for students interested in performing arts pathways, stage operations, production design and front-of-house customer service within entertainment and live performance environments.
The elective encourages creativity, collaboration and innovation while helping students explore modern production and performance industry practices. Students will participate in a range of practical and theory-based activities that strengthen communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills relevant to future study and employment in the creative and performing arts industries.
Students will attend industry excursions and participate in real-world learning experiences that provide insight into live performance venues, production environments and entertainment careers. Through practical projects and collaborative activities, students will explore visual layout and design concepts, incorporating inclusive themes, diversity and respectful creative practices into their work. Students will also learn how to review design briefs, respond to feedback and refine their creative ideas.
The elective also introduces students to front-of-house operations and live venue environments. Students will develop an understanding of customer service, audience engagement, workplace expectations and backstage operations commonly used in theatre and performance settings.
Students who successfully complete this elective may choose to continue their studies through the VCE VET Certificate II in Dance (incorporating partial completion of the Certificate III in Dance) or the VCE VET Certificate III in Music (Performance Stream) in Year 11.
