This is a Sports Coaching and Administration elective where students will develop practical skills in:

  • Coaching,
  • Leadership and development of athletic skills
  • Organising sports tournaments and fixtures

This hand-on elective is designed for students interested in coaching, fitness facilitation, sports leadership and community recreation environments. Students will work on leadership, teamwork and workplace safety while applying modern coaching and sports development practices in realistic sporting contexts. Students will complete a range of practical and theory-based activities that strengthen communication, organisation and leadership skills relevant to future study and employment within the sport and recreation industry.

What You Will Learn

Students will develop workplace health and safety knowledge relevant to sporting and recreation environments. They will learn how to identify hazards, maintain safe training and competition environments and follow emergency and workplace safety procedures while participating in practical coaching and fitness activities.

Students will use their leadership and organisational skills required to:

  • Guide participants through structured training programs and recreation activities.
  • Interpret coaching plans, and deliver basic coaching sessions, to support participants
  • Contribute to the organisation of community sporting activities or tournaments
  • Through practical activities and role-play scenarios, students will develop confidence in coaching, teamwork and effective communication.

Each week, at least one class is run just like a real sporting competition. Instead of just playing games, you’ll be part of a team for the entire semester, taking on different roles such as player, coach, referee, fitness trainer, or media manager. You’ll work together to train, compete, and improve, building teamwork, communication, and leadership skills along the way.

Across the subject, you’ll participate in these structured competitions, develop your game sense and skills, and experience what it’s like to be involved in sport beyond just playing. There’s also a focus on fair play, inclusion, and creating a positive sporting environment for everyone. This work will finish with an end-of-semester sports competition.

If you enjoy sport, teamwork, and a bit of friendly competition, this elective is a fun and engaging way to take your PE experience to the next level.
